Chelsea vs Roma – first versus second in Group C
Group C is one of the most competitive in this season’s Champions League, with three teams that have enough quality to reach the next round of the Champions League. Atletico Madrid, Chelsea and Roma are all used to reaching the knockout rounds but only two can do so this time. Finishing third would mean a Europa League place instead.
Currently Atletico Madrid are missing out on first or second. The Spaniards have just one point after playing Roma and then Chelsea – losing at home to the English club. They have reached the final twice in the last few years and were beaten by Real Madrid on both meetings/ They will need a big improvement in results if they are to improve their position.
Chelsea are in first place and they have been the strongest team in Group C. They beat Qarabag 6-0 in the first game and then beat Atletico 2-1 in what was a famous result. This keeps them in a great position and if they do not lose to Roma then they will be confident of reaching the next stage. They are still to play Madrid at Stamford Bridge in two months.
In England, Chelsea have not been as consistent. They have lost three times already and at the weekend were defeated by Crystal Palace who scored their first goals of the season in a 2-1 win. The Blues are now fifth and are nine points away from the top.
Roma are going to be tricky opponents. They have won five matches in Serie A and have a game in hand on many others – if they win that then they will be just a point behind champions Juventus, but it is Napoli that have been the most impressive – they have won all eight of their league matches.
