Fiorentina v Juventus. After the frustration of losing the Supercoppa Italiana to Milan, Juventus’s full attention turns back to Serie A. The Turn club have won the past five titles and given their imperious start to this season, they are likely to add to that total once more. Excluding that defeat to AC, Max Allegri’s men have won their last six games and are showing, once again, that they are the strongest side in Italy by a distance.
Fiorentina could do with a victory themselves, having had a poor start to the season. Despite finishing fifth last season, Viola are winless in three league matches leaving them in ninth. The main problem has been an inability to get a sequence of consecutive victories together – they have won consecutive games on two occasions, and have already been defeated five times.
This has left Paulo Sousa’s team with a mountain to climb if they are to achieve European qualification again this season – fourth placed Lazio are already 10 points ahead and it is unlikely that they will be caught, particularly as Milan are undergoing something of a resurgence as well. Indeed, Fiorentina’s best chance of success likely lies in the Europa League. They have reached the last-32 stage and will have to see off Borussia Monchengladbach in order to advance when they meet next month.
As mentioned, the future is altogether more promising for the champions. Their massive outlay on new players this summer has seen an already strong squad be majorly enhanced. Gonzalo Higuain, in particular, has shown his worth by scoring 12 times. It is in defence, however, that the Old Lady really excel, with just 14 conceded, while they are yet to draw a game.
Having played a match less due to the Milan fixture, the match in Florence offers the chance to extend their lead to seven points over Roma. Just over the halfway stage of the campaign, such a lead would be crucial for the run-in, particularly as when the sides met last month it was Juventus that got all three points; they do not play again until May, by which point the destiny of the Scudetto may already be known. The club’s dominance of the division in recent seasons sees them 1.07 favourites at Tipbet.
For the Stadio Artemio Franchi meeting, the leaders can be backed at 1.85 to come out on top. Fiorentina’s last home appearance was an entertaining 3-3 draw with Napoli – a point against this week’s opponent is 3.55, with a win even less likely (4.65).
