Middlesbrough v Chelsea. Much-improved Chelsea travel up north to Middlesbrough on Sunday in what is an intriguing meeting. The London club have been sublime in recent weeks; a turnaround that seems down to a change in tactics. The traditional four-man defence has been replaced with three to allow attacking players greater freedom to wreak havoc. This has been good news for individual players – notably Victor Moses and Eden Hazard. However, the change in formation means that Oscar is no longer a regular pick.

The Blues now no longer appear vulnerable defensively, and their performances mean they are now second in the Premier League. Antonio Conte has excellent trophy-winning pedigree and has already changed the mentality of a club that finished 10th last season.

Middlesbrough, on the other hand, are newly-promoted and would be content with survival. Aitor Karanka has masterminded some impressive results – most recently a 1-1 draw at Manchester City. Under the Spaniard the club has managed to attract some great football names, including Victor Valdes, a Champions League winner.

Boro’s home form has not been ideal and they have won just once there. This makes the visit of Chelsea even more difficult; their opponents are unbeaten in five matches. The west Londoners changed their system completely after being outplayed by Arsenal and have been unstoppable since.

The standout feature of that run has been the five clean sheets. Thibaut Courtois has re-established himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the league after a tough year. Karanka’s side will take heart, though, from the fact that five – almost half – of their points total has eventuated from their last three matches.

Another strong result on Sunday at the Riverside Stadium would see the Teesside club take another step towards safety. Their north-east rivals Sunderland look like being relegated, though they recently won their first game under David Moyes. Swansea are also on five points, so it may be that Boro will be battling with Hull City for that final place.

The sports odds show that Chelsea’s marvellous recent winning streak is expected to continue. The away side are 1.55 add another three points, which could see them top the league, depending on other results. A draw (4.10) would be a fantastic outcome for the hosts, though a win is rated at 6.25.
