Monaco and Nice entered the Coupe de la Ligue at the last-16 round, but only one of them will make into the last-four stage. This year’s final is taking place on 31st March, and both teams will clearly be aiming to be there – most likely against Paris Saint-Germain, who are the strongest team in France by a distance. Monaco lost to Paris in the final last year, but their season’s highlight was winning Ligue 1. Monaco also got deep into the Champions League last season, in what was a stunning campaign.

Monaco have had a tough start to the new season and they have found themselves nine points away from Paris Saint-Germain. As they have a much weaker squad than they did last season, it is hard to see them having a higher finish than their current position of second. AS Monaco have already been knocked out of the Champions League after a very disappointing showing and they are now trying to win one of the two French domestic trophies.

Nice are having better luck continentally. They are into the knockout stage of the Europa League after finishing in second place in their group. Last season they finished third and had a fantastic 78 points. They lost only four times in all their league games, but they have lost eight times already in this one and are struggling to be as effective as they are in sixth currently and 11 points away from fourth.

Before Ligue 1 had its winter break, the two teams were in good form and they each won four of their five fixtures, so the game on Tuesday night is two in-form sides.
