Norway v Sweden – a Scandinavian derby in Oslo
Norway host neighbours Sweden on Tuesday night, with both countries heading into the summer break with different mindsets. Last week’s impressive 2-1 win over France means that the Swedes head Group A after six fixtures and, courtesy of their superior goal difference, are heading to Russia automatically for next year’s World Cup as it stands.
Considering that many assumed they would falter on the international stage following the retirement of Zlatan Ibrahimović, this has been a fantastic showing and even if they finished second in what is a tricky group including the Netherlands, Janne Andersson can have confidence that his side could advance from a two-legged play-off.
Though Norway are in Group C with Germany, the world champions, the competition for second place has not involved them. Northern Ireland – who are looking for their first appearance at a World Cup since Mexico ’86 – are heading for a play-off currently with their 13 points from six matches, while the Czech Republic and Azerbaijan both have a better points return than Norway’s paltry four.
Despite Lars Lagerbäck taking over after his Euro 2016 heroics with Iceland that saw them eliminate England and reach the quarter-finals, Norway are no closer to reaching their first tournament since Euro 2000. Their only win in their past eight matches came against minnows San Marino in October, though they did draw with the Czech Republic last Saturday to dent their opponents’ hopes of qualifying.
Although the last friendly meeting between the Scandinavian countries was a goalless draw in 2015, Sweden are 2.50 to win at the Ullevaal Stadion in the Norwegian capital. The rapid improvement of the Swedes since their disastrous Euro 2016 campaign that saw them get a single point is shown in the fact that they are 1.40 with a Double Chance bet to avoid defeat. The home side are 2.85 to build on their Czech Republic draw with a victory, and there are plenty more odds available.
