Real Madrid v Sevilla – a tricky test for Real as they target the Double
It is, as is customary, a battle between Barcelona and Real Madrid for the 2016/17 La Liga title. The Catalans lead having played a match more and they have a superior goal difference. The 3-2 El Clasico victory last month – with Lionel Messi netting memorably late on – gave them momentum and they need Madrid to slip up if they are to retain their trophy for third season in a row; that would be some way for Luis Enrique to bow out after announcing that he will not be renewing his contract. It does feel, in a way, like the end of such a golden era for the club is drawing to a close – especially in the Champions League where they were outplayed by Juventus in the quarter-finals – and fresh, younger talent needs to take over from Andres Iniesta et al.
The Italians, of course, face Real Madrid in the European final next month and Zinedine Zidane has the chance to become the first coach to win back-to-back titles. With three matches to play domestically, he will see Sunday’s match at home to Sevilla as the biggest hurdle.
Their opponents have had a very good campaign to this point; they are in fourth, which means that they are set to play Champions League football once more, and were challenging Atletico for third for the most part. After losing Unai Emery to PSG, Los Blanquirrojos have gone to another level in La Liga under Jorge Sampaoli. Their Europa League win last season, of course, gave them a Super Cup fixture against Real back in August, losing 3-2.
Tipbet rate Real as massive favourites for the game and they can be backed at 1.22 to get three points. With games against Celta Vigo and Malaga lined up, this outcome would put them on the verge of the trophy. A draw (8.00) would see keep them in control of their destiny, while their visitors are 11.0 to put this in doubt. All odds can be viewed here.
