Two-time Wimbledon champion Rafael Nadal exited the tournament at the last-16 stage last night after an epic tussle with Gilles Muller.

In a match that was just short of five hours, the Luxembourgian advanced 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 4-6, 15-13 despite Nadal levelling the contest from two sets down, showing his characteristic fight and competitiveness.

However, the 34-year-old finally converted his fifth match point to stop the Spanish world number two from reaching his third consecutive Grand Slam final, and to set up a last-eight tie against Marin Cilic.

This leaves Novak Djokovic – who must now play his last-16 match against Adrian Mannarino today after the length of Nadal’s exit caused its postponement – Roger Federer and world number one Andy Murray as favourites to claim the silverware.
